Blerick | barracks quarter, cradle to cradle

The redevelopment of the Frederik Hendrik Barracks in Blerick (Venlo) is a great opportunity to strengthen the genius loci of the place. The former barracks were built on a Spanish fortress from the 16th century that is still almost entirely present in the soil. Along with the stately military buildings the fortress creates a unique setting. How to maximize these values in the complex redevelopment project?

A team, consisting of M A R C, DaF-architects and Van den Berg RO advice, worked on a C2C vision on archaeology and cultural heritage as input for the C2C business case. Because our proposal was inspiring, the municipality decided, to fully implement the remains of Saint Michaels fortress in the ‘Kazernekwartier’ as part of regional development, and make it accessible to the public.
