Haarlem | Heritage and Space Vision document
Haarlem, one of the top monument municipalities of the Netherlands , asked itself whether it is MOMO –proof. In addition, Haarlem questioned if it was sufficiently prepared for the direction that has been adopted with the National policy document “Koersen op Karakter” (Focused on Character). Haarlem needs attractive qualities as a city. Cultural heritage is an important factor by which Haarlem can distinguish itself from other cities.
SteenhuisMeurs, in collaboration with M A R C and an interdisciplinary official project group of the city of Haarlem, produced a Heritage and Space vision document. The Historical Association of Haarlem was also involved. In a city like Haarlem, an integrated and area focused heritage care is needed. A switch from object-oriented heritage management to areal heritage conservation would be required. The vision document is the result of combining local needs, national developments in the management of heritage and marks a new impetus for Haarlem as distinctive monument city. Specifically, the vision document provides a course and a priority agenda to guide heritage policy in the coming years.
